Why Film?

I get asked this often. Why are you still shooting film? Especially as digital continues to evolve and improve. And digital is beautiful, and there absolutely is a place for it.

The simple answer is, I choose film because it brings me joy. It is the way I started my journey in photography, and it is what I have come back to after trying digital work.

It allows me to slow down while I am creating. To connect, pay attention and think while I am photographing my subject.

Film is a beautiful medium that has a soft quality to it that I absolutely love. The grain that comes with film and the way it reads light. I love all of it.

I choose film to create something timeless, something that has the same nostalgia that your parents and grandparents have with their images. Taking a picture, sending it in to be scanned , developed, and made into prints is part of the process I enjoy so much.

I choose film because I can trust it. I know there are many ways to store your digital files and photos, however hard drives die, who knows what will happen with images and how we store them in 10 , 20 or even 100 years from now. What I do know is my film negatives are tangible and always printable. I know that when I shoot a roll of film my lab will sleeve and organize my negatives for me and send me jpegs digitally that I can easily share with my clients just like a digital file.

These are some of the reasons I love film so much and will always continue to shoot it. It has a unique quality to it that I want to give to my clients.
