Flowers have an impact on us all, they add to our happiness and well being.

Flowers have a huge impact on us all. Let me tell you where my love for flowers began.

We had just bought our home, and this home was not your typical home. This was the worlds most epic fixer upper. (and we are still fixing) When we moved in we were in the trenches of making 900 square feet livable. The addition was framed, and that's as far as we could go for the time being. The kitchen was complete, but everything else was a mess. I was also pregnant with our 3rd child. We had bats living in the eaves of our roofline. I was catching snakes, lots of snakes, inside that had been hibernating on the dirt floor underneath our floors. ( no real foundation) There was nothing growing outside but two, hundred year old pine trees, one maple tree, and some patchy grass. I needed some sense of beauty and calm. I needed to be able to DO something physically to my space, and my options were very limited.

So I threw down seeds. I lined my two porches with cosmos and zinnias and lucky for me they thrived ( Hello, soil enriched with bat guano). I didn't know what I was doing, or even the first thing about flowers and how to grow and care for them. I went to the local nursery and grabbed an ivy and a few peonies and planted my first perennials. I remember my first vase of flowers. I even photographed it as I was so proud and it made me feel as if my home was the prettiest little home ever. It filled my soul, it elevated my humble little surroundings, and brought a sense of calm to the chaos of my current surroundings. My yard is now filled with things that bloom at various times solely for the purpose of bringing them inside . What started as a need to bring peace and beauty to my space sparked a long lasting love for flowers.

Growing, arranging , and photographing them have become so therapeutic for me.

Tell me, do you have a story that connects you to flowers? I'd love to hear it!
